(SR3) Rumor about a medium format Sony surfaces (again)

Also Photorumors got word (reliable?) on a Sony medium format camera coming the coming 12 months. Nothing new as this rumor is floating on the web since months now (see article here). My sources once told me the Sony medium Format Camera is a sort of digital Mamiya 7 (here on eBay). But the camera should look better and be smaller. So here are the specs/details rumored so far:

– Fixed lens RX camera

– Zeiss prime (35mm FF equivalent)

– 50 megapixel sensors (same used by new Hasselblad/PhaseOne/Pentax medium formats)

– Built-in EVF

– Smaller and cheaper(!) than any other medium format cameras out there. It’s cheaper than the new Pentax 645

All we know from recent interviews is that Sony said such a camera “is possible” to make for Sony and they also stressed to say that they have unique innovative products to come in 2015. Let’s hope this one is one of them!

The High Megapixel war rumors: Canon 46MP camera coming soon(?) and Sony in January/February?

Canon confirmed they are working on High Megapixel camera sensors and my trusted sources Sony is working on such cameras too. Sounds almost like both companies are working on it “on sync” because both companies are rumored to deliver around 50 Megapixels cameras within a close 3-6 months timeframe from now.

I am yet not sure about the rumor about Canon but it’s said that Canon could launch a 50MP Full Frame camera in mid October. Sony will “counterattack” beginning of 2015 (likely in January?). And as for now I heard about a 46 Megapixel FF sensor and a 54 Megapixel FF sensor. Maybe the first is coming…first. And the second sensor on a later camera. The specs I got about the 54 Megapixel sensor are:

focusing area covers 78% of the entire sensor

Of course the info I got as about a sensor prototype and they may slightly differ from the final production version.

P.S.: Quite strange to notice the time after Photokina will be more interesting than the time before Photokina

Good news: Loxia 35mm is “distinctly and visibly better” than the ZM version!

As you know the new Zeiss Loxia FE lenses are based on the current Zeiss ZM lens design. There were some worries that the new Loxia may be just the same ZM lenses with an E as mount. Well 3D-Kraft compared the new Loxia 35mm lenses with the “older” ZM 35mm lens. And as you see form the images on top there is a clear optical advantage on the Loxia. 3D-Kraft writes:

Although the Zeiss Loxia 2/35 uses a similiar (and proven) lens design like the ZM Biogon 2/35 (designed for range finder cameras), it is distinctly and visibly better optimized to requirements of the Sony digital A7 / A7R sensors.

Right now I use an Sony A7 and an A6000 with various manuell lenses (and some Sony lenses) and I´m kind of happy with everything…Except for the fact that there is (was !) no small “rangefinder like” ultra-wide angle available for the A7/A7r series which works well…Yesterday I visited Photokina in Cologne (1 hour drive from where I live) and had the chance to check out the new Voigtlaender 15mm for M-Mount II !! I was really happy that I had my A7 and my Leica M to NEX with me when I heard that I could use it on my own camera and take pictures with it J (Delivery should start in February 2015!!!)So, I thought I would give my findings to you and all lovers of the A7 series. Summary:

I could see no or maybe a REALLY small amount of color cast in the corners ! (maybe it was only a tiny bit of vignette?)

I could see no or maybe a REALLY tiny bit of vignette !

The sharpness is nice and NOT much mush in the corners !

I sold my 15mm M39 only 1 week before so I can tell you, that the differences are HUGE ! I will preorder it for my A7 the day it becomes available ! (depending on the price of course) No word on the price so far, but I´m really looking forward to February 2015 and not only because I have my birthday there…

Panasonic’s new FZ1000 is forcing Sony to react quickly. I am not surprised to have received that rumor from an anonymous source:

Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX20, mid Oct 2014, Same Sensor (20,1 MP, 1″), Same lens (24-200 F2.8), little ergonomical upgrade, 4K video Recording, XAVC-S Codec just like at AX100, 1080p frame rates remains the same, but at 720p @ 120fps will be possibile. S-LOG2 will not be available. Price 1300 USD/1050 GBP, Predecessor remains in the market, with a 100-200 USD price drop.

Competition on the horizon: Canon new camera mount system? Megapixel race is restarting again!

Mark my words guys. Early 2015 will be very exciting for the whole photographic industry with many new cameras and what’s more important new sensors and advanced features. I already told you there is something big from Sony on the horizon (coming January). The Megapixel war is restarting and Canon will likely try to fight back Sony too. There is finally going to be a big battle on the Full Frame Mirrorless and on the sensor ground. These are the reasons:

1) Canon is seriously considering to launch a complete new mount system (Source: MirrorlessRumors). Likely a Full Frame mirrorless system to fight back the A7 series

2) At Dpreview Canon said “In the very near future you can expect us to show something in terms of mirrorless and also a higher resolution sensor.”

It’s going to be strong battle. If Canon gets “serious” with the new FF mirrorless mount system Sony will have to fight against a very strong PR machine. Sony really has to do things right in 2015 to not lose their current advantage. And it’s certainly a good news for us to know they have finally some competition!

First full ILCE-QX1 review at Photographyblog and says it’s and “expensive gimmick”.

Photographyblog just posted the full ILCE-QX1 review and the camera score is just “above average”:

While it is great that you can interchangeable lenses with your smartphone, the Sony ILCE-QX1 is fairly unwieldy to use when attached to a phone itself, and having to attach it and set it all up is a bit of a faff that sometimes ultimately leads you to not to bother.

Where it is more fun, and you can see it being more widely used, is when used remotely – whether that’s for selfies or when attached to a smartphone. Here you can experiment a bit more widely with the Sony ILCE-QX1 and really get the best from it – that said, it’s quite an expensive gimmick for doing such a thing with.

Yep, it’s a strange product but Sony itself said they are selling more of those things than expected. I would never buy one but maybe one day the QX line will become more mature and make more sense to me…maybe

(SR2) New Sony 12 Megapixel Fulll Frame global shutter sensor specs.

The Chinese site Cnbeta claims to have got that image of a new Sony sensor. It’s a 12 megapixel Full Frame sensor with Global shutter.

While I am absolutely not sure if that’s a true image I am sure Sony will make such kind of FF sensors within the next 1-2 years. Sensors with Global Shutter take a snapshot representing a single instant in time and therefore do not suffer from the motion artifacts caused by rolling shutters.

Zeiss Touit macro lens finally in Stock in US. First Loxia in Stock next week.

For unknown reason the Zeiss Touit 50mm macro lens is quite hard to find in USA. But now two of them are in Stock at KenmoreCamera on eBay (Click here)[/shoplink]. A good news is that the 50mm Loxia lens will already ship next week according to BHphoto (Click here).

Sony confirms again A-mount keeps going on. And me working on A-mount rumors…

In an interview with DC.watch Sony confirmed once again A-mount development is going on. And that’s also the kind of info I keep “receiving” from trusted and anonymous sources. I am trying to get some more reliable detailed info about the possible future A-mount stuff release. Let’s hope I can post more “solid” rumors soon!

First preview of the Tamron 15-30mm f/2.8 VC Full Frame lens!

Matt Granger is the first guy who was able to take some shots with the new Tamron 15-30mm f/2.8 VC Full Frame lens. He tested the lens on a Canon but the lens will be available for A-mount too. The lens has a new “super aspherical” element and Tamron’s goal is to beat the Canon 16-35mm and Nikon 14-24mm lens performance. And the 15-30mm will be cheaper than those (final price yet unknown).

Well, from what we see from Matt’s short testing that lens really looks like a winner. Let’s hope that unlike Sigma we will get the Tamron A-mount version the same day as the Canon and Nikon version release!

Sigma says they will yet not make FE lenses. Will keep doing APS-C E-mount and A-mount.

Kazuto Yamaki CEO from Sigma talked to Focus Numerique (translation by SigmaRumors). And there are a couple of news related to Sony stuff:

1) Sigma will not make lenses for the FE system yet

2) Sigma will keep making APS-C E-mount lenses

3) Sigma will soon update the 24-70mm f/2.8 EX DG HSM and the 70-200mm f/2.8 EX DG OS HSM lenses for A-mount.

New Meika vertical grip for the Sony A7 cameras and new flash.

Scottlewisphotography spotted a new vertical grip for the Sony A7 cameras made by the Chinese company Meike. It should be on sale in two months for around 80 Euro. They will also launch a new external flash for E-mount cameras too.

Meike currently sells under water housings and adapters for Sony one Bay (Click here).

What you may have missed: Canon copied the RX100 :)

The last couple of years Canon proved tho have a very conservative approach on the digital camera market. And the best they can do now is to copy the best ideas

Latest example is their newly announced RX100 clone, the Canon G7x (specs here at Amazon). The Canon is cheaper but it doesn’t come with a built-in EVF (that alone makes up for most of the price difference). A good point for the Canon is that it has a wider zoom range (24-100mm). Well at least we have some competition and maybe Sony will lower the price of the RX100m3.
