Announced: The yet tiniest third party FF lens for your A7/s/r camera!

Share

Super_Perar_21_05_A

The eccentric Japanese Lens designer Mr. Miyazaki just released the new MS-Optical Perar 21 mm f/4,5 MC Super Wide Triplet lens. And the extraordinary thing of the lens is that it is only 5,2mm thick and weights 42g! It’s smaller than the M to E-mount adapter you will have to use on your E-mount camera. This makes it likely the smallest and lightest third-party Full Frame(!) lens you can use on your A7 cameras. Instead of using a cap on your camera you can simply put that lens on it and the camera will be always “ready” for a quick shot.

You can see the very first image samples and buy the lens at BreguetCamera on eBay (Click here).

This is the third Perar lens from Mr. Miyazaki. The other two are the slightly thicker 24mm (here on eBay) and 28mm (here on eBay) lenses.

Diglloyd posts the full Batis MTF graphs. “(85mm Batis) Has outstanding micro contrast no less good than the very best Leica M lens”

Share

Zeiss_Batis_mtf_graph

Quick note for Germans: Since today you can preorder the Batis lenses at Amazon: 85mm (Click here) and 25mm (Click here).

Digglloyd is the first site publishing the full graph of the new Batis lenses! Links:
Batis 85mm MTF at Diggloyd.
Batis 25mm MTF at Diggloyd.

Here are some of his early conclusions:

BATIS 85mm:
- Overall contrast is superb wide open, even into the corners.
– Stopping down a bit more delivers outstanding micro contrast at f/5.6, far exceeding most lenses and no less good than the very best Leica M lens.
Has some pincushion distortion. Seems that distortion was traded off for uniformly high sharpness and a smaller/lighter design, knowing that the camera can correct for it automatically (or the raw converter).

BATIS 25mm:
- Modest micro contrast at f/2. However, overall contrast is superb wide open, even into the corners, and that very high overall contrast is critical to visual impact of the image.
– Most notable, the performance is exceptionally uniform at all apertures from center to corner. This is highly unusual for a 25mm lens.

Both lenses are now available for preorder in USA and Europe (UK/Germany)
Zeiss Batis 85mm f/1.8 lens in US at Adorama, Bhphoto. In Eu at Amazon DE, WexUK. In Asia at Digitalrev.
Zeiss Batis 25mm f/2.0 lens at Adorama, Bhphoto. In EU at Amazon DE, WexUK. In Asia at Digitalrev.

(SR3) Did Zeiss just “leak” the Sony A7rII with 56 Megapixel sensor?

Share

56Megapixel

Dear SAR readers, take a look at that image:http://ift.tt/1ERne2q. Zeiss says it has been shot with the Sony A7r and the Batis 85mm lens. But notice two strange things:

1) The resolution of the image is 56 Megapixel
2) The 56MP images have no camera name exif info (had been removed by Zeiss).

Now we have three possibilities:
1) Zeiss up-sized the images for some weird reason I cannot understand.
2) This is a A7II multishift created image (feature that will may be added in a future update). But it’s unlikely to be used on non-architectural shooting and without tripod (reflection in the eye shows photographer handholding the cam!).
3) Or they did shoot those images with the A7rII and then removed the EXIF info. What’s your guess?

The new A7rII is rumored to be announced between mid May and early June at last. Stay tuned on SAR!

(SR3) Few Sony A7rII info….has it a new RAW engine?

Share

A7r

An anonymous source sent me this:

“As far as I have understood it, the A7R II is still just 36MP, with IBIS, better ISO and speed. It will come with some other features, we’ve been told :)”

And another source also added that Sony is working on a new RAW engine. It could be implemented on the new A7rII.

The A7rII, A6100 and new RX cameras will be announced within mid May and end of June in (likely) separate announcements.

Magnus:I just saw the post about using the A7R as a sports camera and would like to share my experiences. I think it works great and regularly use my A7R with Sigma 70-200/2,8 and LA-EA4 adapter shooting floor hockey. It’s really not the fastest camera regarding auto focus and continous shooting but it works! For close up action I have my old A580 with Sony 16-50/2,8.
Here is a sample folder with pictures scaled to 4k (2160p height), most of them are ISO3200-6400:
http://ift.tt/1J7zcD5
…or if you prefer facebook but these are scaled to 1280 pixels width:
http://ift.tt/1J7zfOZ
This might be interesting too, It’s the same floor hockey team at the same arena shot with Tamron 150-600 and LA-EA4 adapter on my A7R. This combo sure gets waaay to close indoors but although its ISO6400 I think it works great:

Christian: “I got the opportunity to test my Sony NEX-5T in extreme conditions. I went for a 2:30 hour walk through the city and next to the Charles River. The temperatures were -24F (-31C) degrees with the windchill! I had to face a lot of wind when next to the Charles River, changing lenses was a challenge and quite risky for the sensor. The camera performed really well during this hike, I did not notice any change working in these temperatures. The screen, AF and battery worked perfectly well. Even if the grip is very small, I could still use it with my gloves but I must admit that it wasn’t very convenient. Against all odds, this little camera passed the extreme weather test!

New Sony A7s tests (Vice News shoots with the A7s in the dark).

Share

a7svice

Vice News shot a series about Boko Haram and used the Sony A7s to record in complete dark scenes. You can see the full video on Youtube (Click here). That kind of reportage would be almost impossible to make without the A7s.

3Dkraft (article here):

The video from the “Carnival of Venice 2015″ is now public. It was recorded with Sony A7S, Atomos Shogun, Zeiss FE 16-35/4 OSS and Zeiss FE 1.8/55. The wideangle clips shot from tripod show the real potential of this combination. Unfortunately, the handheld portrait shots moving around the masks show the loss of quality due to the lack of stabilization of the A7S and the FE 1.8/55 even after digital stabilization (warp) in post processing. Scenes like that require a glidecam, brushless gimbal and additional OSS for professional demands. Irrespective of these little technical imperfections, this video shows the art and beauty of the masks and the scenery in Venice Carnival. Beside that, the article shows some zoomable images taken out as single frames from the video showing the quality of the 4K recording (still in process..).

Sony A7s Supercut Review by Stronzvanderploeg:

Overall the Sony A7s an incredibly specced camera especially considering the relatively low price point. If you need low-light or mirrorless full frame, it’s definitely the camera for you but just know, you’ll have to deal with a lot of workarounds and you’ll have to learn and adjust to some of the backwards design decisions.

Mark:

I’m a long time reader of Sony Alpha Rumors (I’ve been using Sony since the A900), and would like to pass on my recent experiments with combining the A7s with a Microsoft Kinect for a mixture of 2D video and 3D animation. I put together a blog article and some example videos showing how to combine the two devices using DepthKit software, and thought it might be interesting for your readers:

I recently housed my A7s with a Metabones adapter and the Canon 100mm f2.8 IS L in a Nauticam housing and used a prototype port and focus gear to shoot some macro video in the Lembeh Strait in Indonesia. I thought you might be interested to see how it performs;

(SR3) A6100 has no 4K yet?

Share

The rumor comes from an old source who shared correct info in the past. After two-year absence he contacted me back. This doesn’t mean we can be sure the info he shares is correct. As it happened in the past also those kind of source may get wrong info from their contacts. Anyway, this is what he wrote to me:

there’s no A7000 (NEX-7 replacement), but rather an A6000 replacement coming soon. The A6100 has 24.3MP with 1080p XAVCS codec, so looks like no 4K for now. But this is just the info from the importer, so not 100% confirmed :-/

So far the rumors are that new E-mount stuff will come soon: The A7rII will be very likely announced in May. The A6100 may come son the same event or a month later in late June.

Zeiss Q&A about the new Batis lenses (confirms in lens stabilization, made in Japan, unlimited OLED lifetime).

Share

batis_85mm_25mm_zeiss_sony

On Facebook Zeiss answered many questions from their followers:

1) Yes, the Batis 1.8/85 has optical image stabilization
2) The displays are not limited in their lifetime. After many years of intensive use, they will become darker. If sometime they might be difficult to read, they can be easily exchanged by our ZEISS service.
3) Batis lenses use different components than Sony or Sony/ZEISS lenses.
4) Our Batis lenses are primarily made of high-quality plastics, aluminum and optical glass.
5) ZEISS Batis lenses are made in Japan.
6) MTF charts will be available in June.

Both lenses are now available for preorder at BH and Adorama:
Zeiss Batis 85mm f/1.8 lens in US at Adorama, Bhphoto. In Asia at Digitalrev.
Zeiss Batis 25mm f/2.0 lens at Adorama, Bhphoto. In EU at WexUK. In Asia at Digitalrev.

Sony Tidbits (with Malawi wildlife protection video sponsored by Sony).

Share

The video on top has been shoot by Jamie Unwin with the great help from Sony UK. I am glad to hear that Sony sponsors that kind of projects. That iw what Jamie told me:

“I’m an advocate for Sony UK, my latest film about The Illegal WIldlife Trade in Malawi, Africa has just been released.
This year Malawi stands up to wildlife crime, I spent my Christmas producing a short 8 minute film that was shown to the President of Malawi, Peter Mutharika the film was then aired on national TV in Malawi. As a result the president has decided to burn the entirety of Malawi’s Ivory stock piles as a clear signal to the world that Malawi is serious about protecting its wildlife. The film worked as a persuasive and deterrent conservation tool, to show the people of Malawi that if they protect their wildlife and natural places it will benefit them economically by attracting tourism, creating a spiral of economic benefits. The film also exposed that Malawi is taking wildlife crime seriously, enforcing prison sentences to those who commit the crimes.
http://ift.tt/1DrcHnA
We know you have a big media following and as we are trying to reach as many people as possible it would be incredibly beneficial if you would share the film for us.
www.JamieUnwin.com
Sony provided all the equipment to make the film. it was entirely shot on using the Sony a77mk2 and a99.
Many thanks,
Jamie Unwin”

Sony announces Best Quarterly Profit in 7 Years.

Share

Sony_profit
The new revised Sony financial forecast report.

It really looks like the big Sony financial crisis will be over soon. Playstation sales and Imaging Sensor Business made Sony post its best quarterly profit in seven years and increase its projection for annual sales. Sony now expects a full-year operating profit of 20 billion yen, compared with an earlier forecast for a 40 billion-yen loss.

Smartphone-selfie ready cameras and autocar cameras are pushing the Sony sensor sales. There is yet no specific info about how good the Alpha-RX cameras business is doing. But having a booming sensor business certainly helps the digital camera division to keep costs down and to get the best tech :)

I believe i shot this one at 2.8. This is inside a pagoda that i frequent often here in Ho Chi Minh City. Just as i got set up to shoot the rain came, and they closed the opening in the roof eliminating most of the natural light in this part of the pagoda, which actually worked to my benefit. I purposely shot these very dark. My edits are done in LR, a bit if split toning and a curve wash that gives it that hazy look to it. If you want to see the rest you can visit this link and have a look. http://ift.tt/1QuVt2H
P.S. the lines are straight, but so many things here in Vietnam are not built straight or level, you have to find one item (in this case the alter) and work from that. Things also can not be moved around, so you have to shoot them as they are and work with what you have.

Samyang 135mm f/2 first impressions and samples
by Tomasz Kałużny

Today I had a rare pleasure to lay my hands on an extraordinary lens: Samyang 135mm f/2. Thanks to the guys at infoto.pl who made this possible. It’s one of the latest releases from Samyang and I have been waiting for this for quite some time since the lens had a pretty good word of mouth right from the moment it was announced.

But first things first. Since the last time I have seriously upgraded my camera. I went from a Sony NEX5n which I still love to the 24MP Sony A7 so the quality of the photos should be much improved. I will try to post a complex review of the camera in the near future, but I will just say it’s an amazing piece of gear and it surpassed my expectations in every aspect.

The Samyang 135mm is quite a bulky lens, but achieving such wide aperture at that focal length just takes its toll and there’s no way those laws of physics can be bypassed. The first thing you notice are just huge front and rear optical elements, which are a promise of good optical quality and the first photos you take just confirm that 100%. If I could summarize the experience in just one sentence, it would be: “that is the sharpest lens I have ever used”. I have seen a couple tests online prior to using it, but taking the photos myself and then seeing them on a large screen I just couldn’t believe my eyes.
Some of my samples, all taken at f/2 because stopping down is not necessary here (and several 100% pixel per pixel crops):

100% crop

100% crop

100% crop

100% crop
But the sharpness is not all. This lens has got amazing colour rendition and contrast…

….and spectacular bokeh…

….and the chromatic aberration is basically nonexistent.

Every one of 24 million pixels is put to use by this lens. You can see on some of the crops that the detail is almost finer than the digital ‘grain’, I would love to see some samples from a Sony A7R or Nikon D600. I have not corrected chromatic aberration on any of the photos.

Using this lens I camer to had to remember to keep my exposure times short (as it is a tele lens) which was more than easy during the day, but in the afternoon I had too boost ISO100 to ISO800 to stay in the safe zone.

There is an old rule of thumb for exposure times. When handholding your shots your times shouldn’t be longer than 1/(focal length), so basically for this lens the value was 1/135s and 1/160s when you round it off to an existing value. You have to remember though that this applies to full frame, when using a crop sensor, you need to calculate the equivalent. So when using Sony NEX5n (crop factor of 1.5x) with this lens the safe exposure time would be around 1/200s as 1.5 times 135 equals 202.5. You have to remember that this rule just tells you what is the longest eposure time you can safely handhold, it does not mean that all of those shots will be sharp. Shaky hands can ruin everything, but if you are steady, you can just as well pull off a longer exposure time. But still I think this is very useful to keep that in mind.

* The lens I tested was a Nikon mount and I used an adapter to mount it. This does not change anything, but I thought some people might wanna know that.

edit 19.04.15 – I’m adding some more samples:
