Sony US lists crazy low prices: A7r for $199 only! $11,700 off on the 500mm G!!!

Share

Bildschirmfoto 2015-05-31 um 13.13.58

At SonyStore US (Click here and see for yourself) you can get plenty of Sony cameras for a ridiculous price. The A7r for example sells for $199 only (Click here)! And the Sony 500mm f/4.0 got a $11,700 off on Amazon US (Click here to see it).

500G

This obviously has to be a mistake! Anyway, if you buy the camera you may get the cam for the currently displayed price?

Thanks Viet and MR.A. for spotting this.

Great A7II reportage photos shot in “Subzero Playground” conditions.

Our reader “Gift Of Light” worked with the A7II and A7s in extreme subzero temperatureconditions. These are soem of the pics and a short report of his adventure. The full reportage can be seen at SonyAlphaForum (Click here).

“Tracer”
A7s + FE 70-200/4
ISO 100, focal length 200mm, f/4, shutter speed 1/5,000 sec

At lake Baikal, the average temperature is around -15 to -10 degree Celsius. All of my stuff, as in list, worked well, except the battery life. As all of us can expect, the battery life in a bit extreme cold weather should not be long. However, there is something more than that. Sometime I found that the battery status abruptly decreased from many percentages to exhausted, occurred in both A7II and A7s, but after the battery was changed both of them can work normally.

“Burning Cave”
A7 + FE 16-35/4
ISO 100, focal length 16mm, f/19, shutter speed 1/10 sec (HDR blend with +2 and -2 stops photos)

By the way, the exhausted batteries were found that they didn’t really exhaust because when I put them in the chargers, they didn’t charged from the zero. Moreover, I encountered a big problem once about this issue during the trip. At one morning, I went outdoors early since 4:00 AM and stayed there until 8:00 AM. At around 8:00 AM, my A7II abruptly showed exhausted battery status. I tried to replace the battery with many of unused batteries in my bag several times, but each time the A7II showed exhausted battery status after take a few shots. And as I told you earlier, all of them didn’t really exhaust. I don’t know what is the problem between the battery or the camera, but I think the latter is most likely. Otherwise, there is nothing to complaint about my Sony stuff.

“Dawn of The Coldest Desolation”
A7 II + FE 16-35/4
Blending two shots of
ISO 400, focal length 16 mm, f/16, shutter speed 2 sec (for a man)
ISO 100, focal length 16mm, f/16, shutter speed 8 sec (for whole photograph)

However, I want to request something from Sony. First of all, if it is possible, please make new battery with larger capacity. The A7 series is growing day by day and make attention from many professional photographers who want to use a smaller and lighter system for their work but still get image quality of full frame camera. But, to think that if you want to travel to remote areas without electricity for a while, you must bring a huge pack of your batteries to make sure that you will have enough power supply during your trip. That is not good. Another request, could you please add depth of field scale (or even hyperfocal distance) into the camera, just like when we turn the focusing ring and then the focusing distance pop up in the camera. It should be a great feature for landscape shooter like me. These are all I want to request for this time.

New Sony A7s video and tests roundup!

Share

Sony A7s VS Panasonic GH4

Ryan:I shot this feature for /DRIVE run-and-gun style with the Sony A7S a couple months ago. The A7S was rigged with a SmallHD DP4, JuicedLink XLR, Westside AV Sony L battery adaptor and a Movcam cage. Filming took three very long days in direct Arizona sun. The full 27-minute piece was edited and graded in 2 days with Final Cut Pro X. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-SwWoTYJp9A

Almos:his a super low light test I did with the sony A7s, testing out how well the autofocus works in very low light at f5.6 for video. I used the stock 28-70FE lens. Let me just say, it works unbelievably well (in addition to the A7S being an unbelievable low light camera, that we already know). I did this test when recording a BTS footage of a band recording in a pitch dark studio. I like it so much I cut it into a Birdman tribute, enjoy :) http://ift.tt/19oUsZa

Sean:I made this during the Sony/B&H/Philip Bloom event, and was hoping you might share it on your sight: http://ift.tt/1FK2aIu

Danas:Maybe you would like to see and post a short video done with A7s – perfect travel partner https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0DXPiK6R2Mc

Florian:May I ask your attention a moment to introduce the first film project “WAITING” made in Lisbon. All clips are shot up with sony A7S. This project aims to provide an artistic vision of a city, a country, a place … The films of this project are available in several more or less short formats. Some were processed in time “capsules”, while others have been so longer and documented. http://ift.tt/1BV9RX9

Jannik:I found it to be very easy compared to the conventional way of grading, because the Software seems to handle the footage better. And best of all, it’s free! Here’s the link to my video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yCmnuYXl7Gw

Peter:Not a rumour but just sharing my wedding video production shot with a pair of A7S. Quality from these cameras are just amazing! http://ift.tt/1FK29Vc. Am waiting for A7sII now to buy more!

Pentax will use the Sony FF sensor and High Resolution mode.

Share

Image of the Pentax FF prototype at CP+ (Source: DC.watch).

By end of 2015 Pentax will announce their first digital Full Frame DSLR (picture can be seen on top). Rumor has it that Pentax will use the current Sony 36MP sensor used by the Nikon DSLR and Sony A7r. The very important news is that it will feature a High Resolution shooting mode according to the reliable source Thistanaka. The same feature is already used by their brand new K-3II:

The K-3 II is the first camera in the PENTAX line to incorporate Pixel Shift Resolution® for capturing still life subjects with ultra-high resolving power. Pixel shift technology uses the camera’s in-body Shake Reduction mechanism to move the image sensor at single pixel increments, capture 4 separate images, which are subsequently combined into a single high definition image. Benefits include higher resolving power, reduced false color and improved overall image quality of non-moving subjects.

If Pentax can use Sony sensor and their on sensor stabilization for high-resolution mode…than Sony should do this too! As Diglloyd reported such a feature on the A7rII could generate 144MP raw files of your…cat pictures :)

DxOmark tests the Sony FE 24-240mm zoom:

Share

Bildschirmfoto 2015-05-28 um 22.00.10

DxOmark (Click here) posted the full Sony FE 24-240mm lens test. They write:

Costing $998, the FE 24-240mm is not very cheap, but packing a massive 10x focal range, Sony’s OSS image stabilization and dust/moisture resistant construction, you get a lot of lens for your money.
While offering a versatile all-in-one solution for wide-angle or long telephoto shots without having to change lenses, the FE 24-240mm is not the strongest optically and ranks in the lower half of our lens database. That said, the image quality delivered by the FE 24-240mm is good for a superzoom, and as we’ve seen in the Sony FE 24-240mm vs Nikon 28-300mm analysis, the Sony is as good in most areas and actually slightly better than the Nikon at the wider apertures.
The FE 24-240mm’s performance is also better at the wider focal lengths between 24-50mm. Zoom in further to the telephoto focal lengths and Sharpness and Transmission start to suffer somewhat, which has affected its overall score. Head-to-head against the $1,498 FE 70-200mm f4 G OSS, the analysis showed that much better performance is available from a dedicated telephoto zoom with more homogenous sharpness across the entire frame. At the wider focal lengths, however, the FE 24-240mm actually displays better edge sharpness than the FE 28-70mm standard zoom, which covers a much shorter focal range. So if you’re looking for a good quality standard zoom with the added versatility of being able to shoot telephoto without changing lenses, the FE 24-240mm is a convenient and good value choice for Sony A7 shooters.

Gariz launches the gorgeous Alcantara case for the A7 cameras.

Gariz launched an extremely gorgeous Alcantara version of their A7II case. You can already buy it here:
On eBay  in Black (Click here) and Red (Click here).
On Amazon US in Black (Click here) and Red (Click here).

Alcantara is not leather and has the following advantages:
– It feels like leather but it is not.
– Increased durability and stain resistance over leather
– It doesn’t make you sweat.
– It’s flame retardant in case your camera gets launched in an open fire :)

P:S.: Alcantara is composed of about 68% polyester and 32% polyurethane and is very much used in Sports cars because it feels good but you don’t sweat in it.

(SR3) Sony A7rII with 36MP sensor, IBIS and faster AF

Share

A7r

After one of my trusted sources told me that Sony was already producing the A7rII things got a bit silent here. I believe Sony will make a “silent” announcement of the camera just like it happened with the A7II. This means no bloggers and almost no photographers will be able to get their hands on the camera in advance. And if you remember the A7II got announced in Japan only at first.

According to a person who was able to get in contact with a person from Sony Japan this is what to expect with the A7rII:

It has same 36Mp sensor and from what I’ve been told it will have EFCS and IBIS and faster AF.

The A7000 (or whatever the final name will be) is coming in mid-June. So let’s hope the A7rII is coming too and will not get any delay like it happened with the A7000. Remember while the A7000 release info should finally be the right one I am yet not(!) sure when the A7rII is coming.

Sony has a new 12 MP RGBW Sensor for the next iPhone.

Share

While this news is not directly related to the Alpha World it’s still interesting to hear about Sony’s future sensor tech. Feng.com reports that the next generation of Apple iPhones will use a brand new 12 Megapixel RGBW Sony sensor. The “W” stands for “White” pixels and it allows to increase the sensitivity which is a weak point of current smartphone photocameras. Usually those RGBW sensors have as a consequence that the pixels size decreased and therefore the image quality gets poorer. But Sony claims they solved this with a new kind of technology (not explained yet):

While the individual pixels of the Sony models are extremely minute at 1.12μm, the incorporation of the “RBGW Coding” function has realized a SN ratio (signal-to-noise ratio) equivalent to that of a unit pixel size of 1.4μm under conventional methods, which in turn has enables the image sensors to achieve a higher resolution at a more compact size.

Don’t know if that RGBW sensor tech will be applied on future APS-C or FF sensors too.

9) One of the competitive advantages of the Alpha System is the “world’s highest resolution”. Sounds a lot like a 50+ megapixel FE camera is coming! And of course 4K is mentioned too.
10) Reading all files it’s clear that Sony will focus on “Alpha” system in the sense of E-mount and not A-mount (that’s my interpretation).
11) Sony has 60% of the mirrorless system camera market.

In Summary: Sony will push the E-mount system, launch plenty of high end products (A7 and maybe a future A9 series) with world leading innovations. Focus is on High resolution, High ISO, High Speed and 4K technologies. Also likely to be pushed is the RX system while there is no word in those documents what’s going to happen with A-mount.

What are you first impressions about Sony’s strategy?
