Copernican revolution: Next Canon DSLR to use Sony Foveon alike sensors?

Share

Canon-EOS-6D-Sensor

My friend Steve from CanonWatch got a quite strange rumor. According to one of his sources Canon will announce a new DSLR in 2015 which uses a Sony Full Frame and Foveon alike sensor! I haven’t heard any word about this from my trusted sources. But I can confirm a really completely new Sony sensor will be launched in 2015. Maybe the sensor is that good that Canon cannot keep up and has to buy the Sony sensors just like other companies often do?

I think it would be wiser for Sony to use the new generation sensor for their own new FF cameras. Although Sony could do a lot of $$$ selling sensors to Canon…

Sony patent shows Z-shift sensor mechanism!

Share

SonyAlphaForum spotted the US patent 8866965 which discloses a mechanism to changes the flange distance between the mount and the sensor of a camera. It’s basically the Z-shift solution we wrote about last year. This could bring two advantages:

1) Adjust the flange distance depending of the lens

2) You can focus by changing the flange distance rather than focus with the lens. For example you could autofocus with manual Leica lenses.

If you love to read deeply tech details on this just click over at http://ift.tt/1GdPBG7.

Still not sure if such a camera is really coming one day…

P.S.. Do not forget to join the new SonyAlphaForum ;)

Does the Sony FS7 kill the Canon C300? Oh yes says Newshooter!

Newsshooter (Click here) posted the Sony FS7 4K E-mount camcorder field test impressions:

So has this camera won me over from the C300? Well actually yes, so far – with the exception of the waveform/histogram issue which I assume Sony will solve. I need to test more but at this point I’m confident that it will replace the C300 (and possibly my F5 too) as a daily workhorse. Ergonomically it bests the C300 and it suits my style of shooting. It has the 4K option but, just as important for me, it has all the flavours of HD that I need including good old MPEG. Slow motion is a big deal too. I still prefer Canon colours out of the box – but the FS7 produces some nice looking images that I’m pretty happy with.

But Canon lens owners ready to jump on the FS7 should be aware of that:

Don’t rush to buy this camera expecting it to work flawlessly with the Metabones Speedbooster Ultra or EF to E-mount adapters – it doesn’t for now at least. Hopefully there may be a fix from Metabones but this isn’t a combo I recommending at the moment.

An interesting thing I didn’t notice before is that the FS7 is the first E-mount camera that has an “Alpha Mount” mark on the mount. And not the usual “E-mount” as seen on current E-mount photocameras:
