Mark Galer finds faults in Tony’s Northup “Pixel Density vs Noise” test.
On that Youtube video (Click here) Tony Northrup claims that there is actually almost no noise performance difference on still images between the A7s and D810 (once you downsize the D810 images). Marc Galer spotted some “problems” with Tony’s test:
In response to Tony’s Northup “Pixel Density vs Noise” test.
There are a couple of problems with Tony’s argument. He is basing most of his judgement on a photograph of a white wall at ISO 6,400. The highlights of an image are more of an even playing field. The problematic area for noise in our digital images is to be found in the shadows and not the highlights. The test ISO has been capped at ISO 6,400 and the A7S low-light performance really becomes noticeable when the ISO is raised beyond ISO 6,400. 12,800 is the maximum ISO for the Nikon D810 (without artificially pushing it) and 25,600 is the maximum ISO for the A7m2 and A7R.
I would like to quote Ian Norman from the Lonely Speck website: “The sensor on the a7S is relatively ISOless between ISO 3200 and 51200. This means that for any given shutter speed and aperture setting, changing the ISO between these values shouldn’t change the relative level of noise in the image.”
This means that the A7S has two full stops more light collecting potential compared to the Nikon D810 for recording information in extremely low levels of ambient illumination, whilst holding onto the same levels of noise that is present in the files produced by the Nikon D810. I am not sure why Tony forget to mention this in his 22-minute video – but I can see why some people would begin to question his motive or expertise in making this assessment. This is a failure to recognise a significant leap in sensor development – and as Tony pointed out, the Video comparison at ISO 51,200 is profound – but Tony dismisses the A7S advantage as ‘in-camera software processing’ – truly bizarre.

This is a ‘real world’ test. No white wall and ISO values above and beyond the maximum setting cabal by the Nikon D810.
I ‘exposed to the right’ and processed each file using the same settings in Adobe Lightroom. Noise reduction was switched off in camera. White balance was adjusted slightly to render the same colour for the pairs of files and a moderate amount of sharpening and noise reduction applied (+40 & +40).
The A7R stacks up well in these conditions (especially when expositing to the right) but the A7S still shows a clear advantage in additional detail and with less noise when the files from both cameras are exported as 4K files. The A7S still has a stop up its sleeve with noise at 51,200 not climbing above that being recorded at 25,600 although the low light conditions did not require any higher ISO values.

A6000 with 500mm & 850mm telephoto (Guest post by Barry Wells).
Kowa TX17 850mm F9.6
The following review is a guest post by Barry Wells. It has been first posted on SonyAlphaForum. Test with the Kowa 500mm (here on eBay) and Kowa 850mm (here on eBay) lenses.
A6000 with 500mm & 850mm telephoto
Three years ago, I switched from a Canon DSLR system to the Sony Mirrorless system. I spent some time looking for a super telephoto lens to replace my Canon 500mm F4 IS which I had been finding too heavy and cumbersome to carry around. Eventually, I purchased the Kowa Telephoto lens. Unusually, you buy the basic lens and then add a 350mm, 500mm or 850mm adapter. I chose TX10 500mm F5.6 adapter to use with my Sony NEX7 body for bird photography.
The Canon lens it replaced weighed 3870 grams, but the Kowa comes in at 2 kilos lighter, at 1970 grams producing a significant weight saving over a conventional DSLR set up. In addition, by removing the lens hood and focal length adapter, the lens measures a mere 250mm (9.8”) in length, making it really practical for travelling.
Kowa TX10 500mm F5.6
The lens unit features dual, manual focus rings, incorporating quick and ultra fine focus options. Used in conjunction with Sony’s superb focus peaking/magnify functions, focussing is quick and accurate. However, being manual focus only, shooting ‘Birds In Flight’ is quite challenging. Featuring fluorite and extra low dispersion lenses, the optical quality is excellent and compares favourably with my old Canon 500mm F4. Build quality is also first rate.
Shot with Kowa TX10 500mm F5.6
I recently added the TX17 850mm F9.6 adapter as I had bought an A7 and found I needed the longer reach with a full frame body. The 850mm is not as sharp as the 500mm but is still quite acceptable – a bit like adding the 1.4x extender to the Canon 500mm, and you do need good light with a F9.6 aperture.
Shot with Kowa TX17 850mm F9.6
Both TX adapters are Sony ‘A’ mount, so you will need a Sony LA-EA3/4 adapter to connect them to the A7 and A6000 bodies.
Obviously without image stabilisation, a tripod is recommended, but not essential. The Meadow Pipit was taken hand held with the 500mm. With a minimum focus of 3 metres, closeups like the Wheatear image are quite possible with the 850mm.
The Kowa will not suit everyone, as manual focussing on moving subjects is a tricky skill to acquire, but the results from this unusual lens are very rewarding.

Limit between Spanish Banks and UBC’s Endowment Lands. It was a really interesting place to be, because while I was still in the city, I was able to point my camera towards an area where the sky was much darker, and I could see light pollution on the opposite side. I’ve seen city glows when I was far between small cities/villages, but never from within the limits of a major city.

Put the FE 28/2 to work today. AF was great, vignettes like crazy but sharp…but for $400, you can’t go wrong with this. Lenses used today were 28/2 (FE) on A7 and 50/1.4 (A), 85/2.8(A) using LA-EA4 on A7s.

Having an uncompromising work schedule means making compromises in photography, and as such I’ve become accustomed not only to shooting waterfalls in nontraditional (e.g., bright and sunny) conditions but also embracing the challenge that comes with this. I really didn’t think this image was going anywhere when it was sitting as a raw file in my archives, but thanks to the Sony I was able to pull up the shadows and render this high-DR scene with a single exposure. Yes, there are blown highlights on parts of the water, but I think any detail that might have been retained there would have done little to enhance the image (you may disagree, though, and that’s cool with me). wink emoticon Thanks for looking!
