Sony is working on a Lytro alike camera (Patent).

The complex image on top shows you a new Sony Light Field sensor that has been patented by Sony (United States Application US20140071244). Basically it’s a Sony version of the famous new Lytro Illum (here on Amazon). As you know a Light field camera can take the entire light field instead of a pure 2D image. It means you can refocus in post production and even change the perspective. Try it out here:

Well, the drawback of such cameras is that the resolution is very low. And that’s exactly what Sony claims to have fixed in this patent:

“a camera system that have no useless pixel arrangement and are capable of suppressing decrease in resolution which may be caused by adopting stereo function.“

The sensor tech is very complicated and we have to see how long it will take for Sony to get this into a real mass-produced camera. But now imagine for a second to have a Full Frame camera with such a sensor. Damn, that would be amazing …or not?

Metz flash units for “Sony Multi Interface” flash shoes

Metz announced the new flah unit for “Sony Multi Interface”.

Here is the official press release (Source: Metz.de):

The Sony versions of the two Metz flash units 44 AF-1 digital and 52 AF-1 digital now come equipped with new feet for cameras with “Sony Multi Interface” flash shoes. While the mecablitz 44 AF-1 digital is considered to be one of the most handy flash units available, the powerful mecablitz 52 AF-1 digital is particularly impressive thanks to its convenient touch display and nu-merous adjustment options. Since the middle of last year, Sony digital cameras now come with the “Sony Multi Interface” flash shoes, making it necessary to adapt the Metz Sony-compatible flash units accordingly. Therefore, now the Sony versions of our 44 AF-1 digital and 52 AF-1 digital flash units have been given new flash feet. This means a Sony flash shoe adapter is no longer necessary. A corresponding adapter is required if you wish to connect flash units with the conventional Sony/Minolta flash feet. These adapters may be included in the scope of delivery for some Sony camera models.

Sigma 50mm ART lens gets another thumbs up from Photozone!

Our long time colluegue Klaus from Photozone tested the 50mm Sigma ART lens (FF Canon mount version). And he says it’s:

better than all the other 50mm lenses that we have tested to date. The new (untested) Zeiss Otus 55mm f/1.4 may still be better, especially regarding bokeh fringing, but it’s a manual focus lens and in terms of size, weight and astronomical price tag it just cannot be everybody’s darling anyway.

This is really a must have lens for all A-mount camera owners! Just like the 55mm FE Zeiss is a must have for E-mount guys!

I used the new Carl Zeiss 24-70mm/f4 and the 1993 Minolta 85mm/f1.4 with the LA-EA4 adapter. The autofocus was amazing with both lenses. I was expecting the contrast-detection system to show a bit of lagging, but no, it was focusing on the ever-moving musicians quite easily. It was lightning-fast as my A99 but it was very accurate and did not hinder me at any point.

All of the Kasabian images were shot on ISO 6400, and some of them were shot in even higher ISO values. I found that I could easily shoot ISO 12800 and match the performance of the Sony A99 at ISO 4000-5000. The last (setlist) image, for example, is ISO 20000. I’ve left the EXIF information on the files.

I gave the camera here and there to professional Nikon and Canon guys, and there was a lot of jaw-dropping with the high-ISO performance of the Sony A7s – they could not believe that this camera can shoot ISO 51200 and produce such clean results.”

Zeiss promises a fix for the Touit 50mm macro flash delay problem.

Our reader Jim noticed an issue with the new Zeiss Touit 50mm macro lens:

I have recently purchased the Touit 50 macro for my Sony a6000 and was delighted with the combination until I found that the lens is unusable with the camera when the flash is deployed. There is a 3 second delay from pressing the shutter button to the flash and shutter operating.

He contacted Zeiss to ask for a solution and that’s their answer:

Yes, this flash problem with the Sony cameras could be solved with a firmware update for the Touit lens. A new firmware is under development and is scheduled to be released during this summer.

When a new firmware update is available, we will inform you by email.

Competition news: Nikon D810 features Sony 36MP sensor.

This is likely one of the most unexciting camera updates ever. Nikon announced the new D810 (specs at Amazon) which features the Sony 36MP sensor and brings only very minor improvements over the D800 (electronic first curtain and so on). The news that matter for us are:

1) There is no new Sony FF sensor in use with the camera. This is the same A7r sensor. Don’t know if that means that Nikon has no exclusivity on new Sony sensors anymore…

2) This may be a chance for Sony to close the gap with their new A-mount FF that could be announced at Photokina in September.

It will be far more intersting to se what Canon is up with their new FF sensor tech. Going to be an exciting rumor summer

(SR2) A-mount rumors: New 135mm Zeiss shppping early 2015. New 85mm Zeiss coming too?

Two weeks ago I told you how the current Zeiss 135mm f/1.8 A-mount lens would get replaced at Photokina. The new version is said to have the same optical design but it will be upgraded with the “SSM” focusing mechanism. According to a source from the French site Chassimages the new Zeiss will ship in early 2015 (has 77mm filter diameter and weights 1050g). The source said that also the current 85mm f/1.4 A-mount lens will get a similar update later.

Sony A7S vs. A7R vs. Canon EOS 5D III shootout at Dpreview. A7s manual for download.

Dpreview (Click here) posted a Sony A7S vs. A7R vs. Canon EOS 5D III shootout. Their conclusions are:

- At ISO 204,800 and beyond the A7s has up to a 2 EV advantage

- At Moderately high ISO performance the A7s has up to a 1 EV advantage in shadows

- No difference between the cameras at low ISO.

At the end their conclusion is:

The Sony A7S enables the use of incredibly high ISOs, including some unavailable to most cameras. When shooting at incredibly low light levels, the A7S will most likely give you significantly better results than any camera that does not natively shoot at these ISOs. There are also some advantages to be had over the higher native ISOs of the cameras we tested: we see the A7S overtake the A7R in normalized shadow noise performance at ISOs above 6400 in our tests. At more moderately high ISOs (6400 and below) as well as in brighter regions of images – where image quality is determined primarily by how much total light is captured – the normalized ISO performance of the A7S will be similar to that of full-frame cameras of its generation.

The A7s is quite unique for a hybrid stills/video camera because it bucks the trend of going for ever increasing megapixels. RX100M3 gets DxOmarked. Ships now in Europe and USA.

SAR readers reported that their RX100M3 preorder at Amazon USA and Sony USA stores just shipped! And first EU stores like FotohansKeuzekamp have it in Stock too! In the meantime the Sony RX100M3 sensor got DxOmarked and there is obvisouly no surprise. It match the performance of the previsou models. Marketing fail? Worldcup photographer wear Sony 4K vest but do shoot with Canon :)

Sony is one of the big sponsor at the Football World Cup in Brazil. Even photographer are “forced” to wear Sony 4K advertising vests. But as you can see from the 360 degree pics posted at Visualise.com not a single of them shoots with a Sony. It’s all about Canon (and few Nikon). Let’s hope Sony will mae a real Alpha Full Frame Sports camera that will convince some of them to switch over to Sony!

The new Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX100 III is once again a better camera than its predecessor, both in terms of features and image quality, but it has gone up in price again. The eye-watering price-tag of £699 / $799 continues to be an awful lot to ask for a humble compact camera, making the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX100 II one of the most expensive models on the market and putting it into direct competition with mid-range compact system cameras and entry-level DSLRs. Having said that, this camera will actually be a better fit for many people, especially if size is a priority, and it also makes a perfect second camera for professionals. We loved shooting with the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX100 III, which proves there’s still a lot of life left in the compact camera yet…
